A driverless car, WIRIN (Wipro Research and Innovation Network), an initiative of Wipro, Indian Institute of Science (IISc), and RV College of Engineering, was unveiled in Bengaluru.
A Second video of Sri Sri 1008 Satyatma Theertha Sripadangalu of Uttaradi Matha seated inside the driverless car, uploaded by Adarsh Hegde (@adarshahgd) on X, has gone viral. The seer, seated comfortably in the autonomous vehicle, observed as it glided smoothly across the college campus, powered by indigenous self-driving technology. “The event was presided over by Ramachandra Budhi, global head, autonomous systems and robotics at Wipro, MP Shyam, president of Rashtreeya Sikshana Samithi Trust (RSST) and KN Subramanya, principal of RVCE. This innovation and collaboration is the result of six years of designing and developing an indigenous autonomous car by a team of faculty and students, coordinated by faculties Uttara Kumari and Rajaa Vidya of RV College of Engineering,” a source told Moneycontrol. The driverless car is a newly developed concept vehicle resulting from a major collaborative research project involving Wipro, the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), and RV College of Engineering (RVCE) in Bengaluru, India.
Project Details and Collaboration the vehicle was created through the Wipro Research and Innovation Network (WIRIN) initiative.
This academic–industry partnership began in 2019 to address challenges specific to Indian roads, such as potholes, crowded traffic, and unexpected animal crossings. The team includes faculty and students guided by RV College professors Uttara Kumari and Rajaa Vidya, working for six years on the concept and its testing.
Technical Features key technologies integrated into the vehicle include:Advanced artificial intelligence and machine learning for self-driving navigation.
Sensor and camera arrays enabling visual computing and object recognition.
Robotics and 5G-based Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) communication for real-time interaction and decision-making.
Design to tackle mixed traffic, diverse obstacles, and unpredictable environments typical of Indian roads.
Development Status a prototype of the driverless car was unveiled at RV College of Engineering in October 2025, with video demonstrations showing the car autonomously navigating the campus as local dignitaries and the public observed.
The project is still in the testing and mapping phase, with the team focused on large-scale trials and ensuring operational safety before broader deployment.
Future Outlook the driverless car project stands as a milestone in Indian autonomous vehicle research, showcasing indigenous innovation and the potential for deeper collaboration between academia and industry.
Researchers expect further development in AI, robotics, and next-generation mobility, eventually contributing to a more self-reliant and technologically advanced automotive sector in India.
About the Project
The autonomous car is not a commercial product but a prototype from the WIRIN (Wipro-IISc Research and Innovation Network) program.
