More than 200,000 banking jobs in Europe could be eliminated by the end of the decade as lenders accelerate their adoption of artificial intelligence and reduce the number of physical branches.
The warning comes from analysts at Morgan Stanley and was first reported by the Financial Times.
According to the analysis, Europe’s banks could reduce their workforce by about 10% by 2030. The estimate is based on a review of 35 major lenders that together employ around 2.12 million people. The US IT unemployment fell to 4.6% in April, according to data from Janco Associates. Still, jobseekers — particularly midlevel professionals without AI expertise — face increasing challenges as AI and automation reshape the employment landscape.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the number of unemployed IT workers fell to 119,000 last month. Employers remain selective, with hiring concentrated in areas such as AI, cloud computing, and cybersecurity. Many companies are looking to AI tools to increase productivity, often reducing demand for routine technical roles.

Morgan Stanley found that job losses are likely to be highest in back-office functions, including risk management, compliance and internal operations. These roles rely heavily on data processing, document checks and reporting, tasks that AI systems can carry out faster and at a lower cost.
According to the analysis, banks expect efficiency gains of up to 30 per cent by using AI-driven tools for activities such as reviewing spreadsheets, monitoring transactions and managing regulatory requirements.
European banks are under pressure from investors to reduce costs and improve returns, which continue to lag behind their US counterparts.
Several lenders have already announced job cuts. In November, Deutsche Bank’s asset management arm DWS said it planned to cut around one-fifth of its full-time workforce by 2028. In March, Société Générale chief executive Slawomir Krupa said “nothing is sacred” as the French bank works to rein in its high cost base. Morgan Stanley said artificial intelligence offers banks an opportunity to improve cost-to-income ratios, a key measure closely watched by investors. The report added that faster digitalisation could reshape European banking in the coming years, particularly in France and Germany, where cost pressures remain high.
Banks are also experimenting with new uses of AI. UBS has begun using the technology to create analyst avatars that send videos to clients.
Jason Napier, head of European banks research at UBS, said efficiency gains from AI are already visible in sectors such as audit, law and consulting, though banks have yet to fully realise similar benefits.
“Cost bases remain large, and these powerful new tools are still not fully implemented,” Napier told Financial Times.
As part of its AI push, UBS recently sent 250 of its most senior leaders to Oxford University for an AI-focused leadership summit, according to people familiar with the matter. Some banking executives have urged caution. Conor Hillery, JPMorgan Chase’s co-head for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, warned against losing focus on core banking skills while adopting AI.
He said JPMorgan was trying to balance the use of AI to speed up routine tasks while ensuring junior staff continue to build essential expertise.
“Otherwise, we’re storing up a big problem for the future,” Hillery said, while speaking to Financial Times. A link has a weighting that is applied to the stimulus passing along it. The link weights enhance or inhibit the stimuli. The knowledge held in the network is distributed throughout it in the form of features such as these thresholds and weights. The network has an input layer of nodes, an output layer, and a number of intermediate layers in between. Learning in, or ‘programming’ of, a neural network proceeds broadly as follows. The network is set to its initial condition, typically with thresholds and weights set at random. It is presented with a learning set of pairs of inputs and outputs that it is then taken through. For each input the output is observed and adjustments are made to the thresholds and weights according to some strategy. The process is repeated until the learning set is exhausted.
Neural networks represent an attempt to mimic the biological nervous system with respect to both architecture as well as information processing strategies. The network consists of simple processing elements that are interconnected via weights. The network is first trained using an appropriate learning algorithm for the estimation of interconnection weights. Once the network is trained, unknown test signals can be classified. Behavior includes movement, social interaction, cognition, and learning. At its core, behavior provides animals with adaptive mechanisms for adjusting to changes in their environment and for manipulating the world around them. This chapter illustrates that using the four central questions of animal behavior—causation, development, survival value, and evolution—a testable hypotheses can be formed and much deeper understanding of behavior can be achieved. The discussion expands these questions and analyzes how they can be applied. Two animals are discussed in particular—the wolf and the cockroach—that have contributed greatly to the understanding of animal behavior. Concludes with an overview of the history of the study of animal behavior. Comparative psychology is defined as the study of similarities and differences in the behavioral and psychological capacities of various species, which encompasses evolutionary relationships, species-typical behaviors, and the use of nonhuman species as models to understand human behavior. Because an understanding of social relations is in one way or another fundamental across all of the social and behavioral sciences, social psychology is a crossroads discipline. Managing that position, that is, acquiring theoretical insights and new methods from neighboring disciplines while exporting its own theories, findings, and tools to those disciplines, represents an important challenge for social psychology. Neuroscience is one of the most heavily experimental fields of biological and medical research. As such, statistical approaches have traditionally focused on testing specific predictions based upon well-focused hypotheses. However, neuroscience data are often derived from repeated measurements and stimulus type presentations with a limited number of subjects, some of which may have incomplete data per subject. Here we provide an introduction to a group of diverse and powerful statistical approaches, which we term the ‘5 Ms’, which have been successfully used in other fields of biological research facing similar constraints. The standard treatment of missing data in most statistical packages is complete case (CC) analysis done by casewise deletion. Any observation that has a missing value for any variable is automatically discarded and only complete observations are analyzed. The main potential advantage of this approach is its simplicity, as standard complete data statistical analysis can be applied straightforwardly. Disadvantages stem from the potential loss of information in discarding incomplete cases. This is particularly acute in multivariate settings, where incomplete cases are often a substantial portion of the entire data set and deleting them would entail throwing away large amounts of data. This loss of information leads to two problems: loss of precision (increasing the uncertainty of the estimations) and bias when the missing data mechanism is not MCAR, but only MAR, because in that situation the complete observations are not a random sample of all the observations.1 Figure 14.35 shows the complete stage as recommended. We can highlight that verification is a very important part of the complete.

Such data sets are similar to the previous ones, though instead of giving marks, the individuals interviewed must indicate an order for some given criteria. The given example is based on the preferences of students for certain subjects.
