The Indian Embassy in Oman said on Sunday that it had learned of the shipwreck of 14 Indians off the coast of Oman. The embassy said the Indians have been safely rescued and the rescue operation is still underway.

How did the ship sink? 

The embassy stated that the ship’s engine had failed. The embassy added that the Indian crew had been safely transferred to life rafts.

Sources said Indian Navy ships were dispatched to the sinking vessel. A US Navy P8 aircraft dropped a life raft. Another vessel, the MV Jabal Ali 9, was also heading towards the sinking vessel. Sources said that according to information received from the MV Jabal Ali, all 14 Indians had boarded the life rafts.

What is the situation now?

The Indian Embassy said that all Indians are safe but rescue operations are being carried out through nearby ships in coordination with Omani authorities.
